• To research scientific basic and advanced geodetic methods to establish dynamic coordinate system and national geodetic information system, monitor movements of earth crust and basic survey data on Earth’s gravity, topography of land and sea-based in Vietnamese territory.
• To research scientific basic and atlas technology, map, photogrammetry and remote sensing based on information technology to establish atlas, electronical map and geographic information system.
• To research scientific basic and engineering geodetic methods, cadastral survey for management of land and properties attached to land.
• To participate in researching scientific basic of geodesy and cartography for orientation of development strategies, policies and legislation of geodesy and cartography sector, to participate in planning scientific-technological development strategy of the Ministry.
• To submit to the Minister long-term plan, five year plan and annual plans for scientific and technological research, and pilot production projects on geodetic and mapping products; implement such plans and projects upon approval.
• To research and complete methods and technologies on geodesy, cartography and geomatics for investigation, assessment and analysis of natural resources and environment status.
• To research application and transfer of science-technology on geodesy, cartography and geomatics.
• To research scientific basis and develop regulations, technical standards and specifications and economic-technical norms on geodesy and cartography.
• To conduct main production programs/projects at national and sectoral levels, and research scientific works on geodesy, cartography, cadastral survey and mapping as assigned by the Minister; to collaborate with domestic and international organizations/ agencies in scientific research and technology application for surveying and mapping in accordance with legislations.
• To participate in appraisal of scientific and technological research works, programs and projects on geodesy and cartography assigned by the Minister.
• To implement science-technology services on geodesy and cartography in accordance with legislations.
• To conduct post-graduate courses on geodesy and cartography in accordance with legislations.
• To conduct science-technology information services on geodesy and cartography in accordance with legislations.

• The task of training Doctor degree (major of Advanced surveying) with branch code: 62.52.85.10 was assigned for VIGAC by the Minister (Ministry of Education and Training) according to Decision No.3080/QD-BGDDT dated 20/07/2011.
• At this moment, there are more than 3000 international and domestic books and magazines. The e-library and website vigac.vn were applied to support for the researchers as well. From 2011, we opened the course continuously according to assigned task.
